JULIAN SCHNABEL

USA

Born in 1951 in New York, USA.
Julian Schnabel studied Fine Arts at the University of Houston where he obtained his Bachelor of Fine Arts from 1969 to 1973, then obtained a scholarship from the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York to follow the "Study program for young artists ”.

He quickly became an important figure in the neo-expressionist movement, on the New York scene with David Salle. (George Baselitz, Anselm Kiefer, Albert Oehlen, Basquiat, Keith Haring, James Brown, Robert Combas, Francesco Clemente, Mimmo Paladino)

Neo-Expressionism is a pictorial phenomenon that emerged in the late 1970s. It developed in Europe and the United States as a reaction against conceptual and minimalist art.

The neo-expressionists returned to figurative painting, adopting a violently emotional style and deliberately provocative iconography.

Schnabel's first major solo exhibition took place at the Contemporary Art Museum Houston in 1976, followed by a solo exhibition at the Mary Boone Gallery in 1979.

His overwhelming success on the art market is however called into question by the arrival of Jean-Michel Basquiat, his youngest of 15 years, which Schnabel will tell in his film “Basquiat”.

Other personal exhibitions have been presented at the Kunsthalle Basel, at the Leo Castelli Gallery, New York; at the Galerie Yvon Lambert, Paris; at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; at the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf; at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; at the Pace Gallery, London and New York.

Schnabel lives and works in New York and Montauk, Long Island.
